Coherent surface-subsurface fingerprint of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation

چکیده
[1] Satellite altimeter data shows a weakening of the North Atlantic subpolar gyre during the 1990s, which is thought as an indicator of a slowdown of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). However, whether the recent slowing subpolar gyre is a decadal variation or a long-term trend remains unclear. Here I show that altimeter data is highly correlated with instrumental subsurface ocean temperature data in the North Atlantic, and both show opposite signs between the subpolar gyre and the Gulf Stream path. Such a dipole pattern is a distinctive fingerprint of AMOC variability, as shown for the first time by a 1000-year coupled ocean-atmosphere model simulation. The results suggest that, contrary to previous interpretations, the recent slowdown of the subpolar gyre is a part of a multidecadal variation and suggests a strengthening of the AMOC. The ongoing satellite and subsurface temperature measurements could be used to monitor future AMOC variations sensitively. Citation: Zhang, R. Mountain ranges favour vigorous Atlantic meridional overturning
[1] We use a global Ocean-Atmosphere General Circulation Model (OAGCM) to show that the major mountain ranges of the world have a significant role in maintenance of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). A simulation with mountains has a maximum AMOC of 18 Sv (1 Sv = 10 m s ) compared with 0 Sv for a simulation without mountains. Atlantic heat transport at 25°N is 1.1 PW with m...
متن کاملSurface changes in the North Atlantic meridional overturning circulation during the last millennium
Despite numerous investigations, the dynamical origins of the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age remain uncertain. A major unresolved issue relating to internal climate dynamics is the mode and tempo of Atlantic meridional overturning circulation variability, and the significance of decadal-to-centennial scale changes in Atlantic meridional overturning circulation strength in regul...
متن کاملTropical North Atlantic Subsurface Warming Events as a Fingerprint for AMOC Variability During Marine Isotope Stage 3
The role of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) as the driver of Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) variability that characterizedMarine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) has long been hypothesized. Although there is ample proxy evidence suggesting that DO events were robust features of glacial climate, there is little data supporting a link with AMOC. Recently, modeling studies and subsurface temper...

[1] In this paper for the first time I show that themultidecadal variations of observed tropical North Atlantic (TNA) sea surface temperature (SST) are strongly anticorrelated with those of the observedTNA subsurface ocean temperature, with long-term trends removed. I further show that the anticorrelated change between the TNA surface and subsurface temperature is a distinctive signature of the...
متن کاملSimple Mechanistic Models of Mid-Depth Meridional Overturning
Two idealized, three-dimensional, analytical models of mid-depth meridional overturning in a basin with a southern-hemisphere circumpolar connection are described. In the first, the overturning circulation can be understood as a ‘pump and valve’ system, in which the wind forcing at the latitudes of the circumpolar connection is the pump, and surface thermodynamic exchange at high northern latit...
